Nathan, Judah, Jim. EVA #15: 14:13 / 16:42. Judah, Nathan, Jim. Brief Narrative of Field Mission Results: EVAs today consisted of geocaching and exploration. EVA Data/Interpretations: EVA #14: Crew searched for Geocache, but the coordinates given of the cache were incorrect. EVA #15: Crew explored the area surrounding the Hab and practiced EVA dexterity and precision through archery in a spacesuit. Unfortunately the geocache was not found and it was determined that the given coordinates for the geocache are incorrect. The afternoon consisted of a long exploratory EVA. The Commander, Engineer, and XO explored the area around the HAB and also evaluated the precision and dexterity of working in an EVA suit through archery. It was determined that accuracy can still be achieved within the constraints of a spacesuit. Continuation of experiments also consisted of the psychophysiological analysis on crewmembers and measurements of effluent from the sedimentary water filters. Tomorrow will consist of another full day of experiments on Mars and EVAs such as Satellite Comparison Study and Sandstorm Rover evaluation. Science Report 1Judah Epstein Reporting The purpose of this project is to explore the effectiveness of a slow sand sedimentary water filtration system in a planetary environment. To simulate a planetary environment the experiment is conducted at the Mars Desert Research Station, a self-sustaining planetary research experiment and simulation expedition. Background information regarding the project abstract, purpose, goals, and specific experiment details and information are included in the Science Report from January 6. ___________________________________ The following data was collected yesterday (January 8): MISSION SUPPORT NOTE: Table information below has been commented out, in favor of the spreadsheet of the Jan 8th data here. NOTE: Some units below have also been clarified: K - cm/s t- seconds TDS - raw probe reading Temp - C SpC - mS/cm DO - mg/L TDS - g/L ORP - mV Turbidity - NTU Hardness, Total Chlorine, Free Chlorine, Alkalinity, Cyanuric Acid - ppm Nitrate - ppm. mg/L Nitrite - ppm. mg/L Science Report 2Tonya Thompson Reporting I performed 3 psychophysiological reading sessions on each crewmember today. Each session lasted 3 minutes. The crewmember entered my stateroom, sat in a chair, placed finger sensors on their 3 middle fingers, and watched a white image projected onto a wall for 3 minutes. During that time, I recorded their heart rate variability (hrv) and skin conductance level (scl). The data for each session was saved to the hard drive of a desktop pc in my stateroom. EVA 14 ReportNathan Wong Reporting Time: Enter Airlock: 11:03 Exit Airlock: 11:54 Crew Members: Nathan Wong Jim Crowell Judah Epstein Site Location: South of the Hab Transit Mode: Walking Objectives: Find the geocache hidden by MDRS crew 96 Results: We did not find the geocache. Initially the crew had the settings of the GPS on NAD83, and then realized it was incorrect and should be at NAD27 CONUS Datum. The crew corrected the setting, but even with the new setting the geocache location did not match with the given coordinates. It was determined that the given GPS coordinates of the geocache are incorrect. Lessons Learned: Check to make sure the settings on the GPS are correct when navigating to a waypoint. EVA 15 ReportJudah Epstein Reporting Time: 14:13 / 16:42Crew Members: Judah, Nathan, Jim Site Location: ATV trails to the North and East of Hab. Transit Mode: ATV Objectives: Explore around the Hab and evaluate dexterity and precision while in spacesuit through archery. Results: Some of the ATV/4WD trails on the map in the Hab are either not present or washed out. Precision through archery can be successfully achieved while in an EVA suit. Lessons Learned: Crew-members learned the distance at which radio contact is lost with Hab-com. Cook's ReportJim Crowell Reporting 1a) Was today a cooking day. YES 1b) Was today a special day celebrated at the main meal with special food or activity? No. 2) List the foods served at today's main meal Mostaccioli pasta with beef and vegetables sauce Focaccia bread Raspberry drink (sugar-free) Cran-pomegranate drink (sugar-free) 3) List any main meal foods not finished by the crew: NONE 4) Recipes for anything more complicated than following package directions exactly, or rehydrating. Pasta with beef and vegetables sauce: Rehydrated the dehydrated tomatoes, onions, celery, mixed bell peppers, and spinach. Added basil, garlic, and oregano. Added rehydrated beef. Poured hot sauce over cooked noodles, and stirred. Recipe for focaccia bread Adapted from http://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/blitz-bread-no-fuss-focaccia-recipe 1.5 c warm water 3 T olive oil plus extra for drizzling 1.25 T salt 3.5 c white flour 1 T instant yeast Cheese seasoning packet from 1 5 oz package of au gratin potatoes (substitute for 0.25 c cheese powder called for in original recipe) 4 t mixed basil, oregano, and garlic powder (substitute for pizza dough flavor in original recipe) 1. Lightly grease a 9”x 13” pan and drizzle 1-2 T olive oil on the bottom. 2. Combine water, 3 T olive oil, flour, yeast, 2 t seasonings, and cheese packet and beat well until a sticky batter forms 3. Scoop the batter into the prepared pan, cover with oiled foil or plastic wrap, and let rise at room temperature until puffy, around 60 minutes. 4. Preheat oven to 375°F 5. Poke dough all over with a finger 6. Drizzle top of dough with olive oil and sprinkle on the last 2t of seasonings 7. Bake 35-40 minutes or until golden brown 8. Remove from oven, let stand 5 minutes, transfer to rack, serve warm or at room temperature. 5) Comments/questions: In the recipe for focaccia bread that Jean left me, it called for 1/4 cup of cheese powder. I could not find any cheese powder provided, so I used some that came in the package of Au Gratin potatoes. The bread was delicious!! |
