Miscellaneous: Sunday on Mars, so we took it easy. Commander's ReportVirgiliu Pop Reporting
It's Sunday on Mars, so we decided to take it easy. The previous night, we did some stargazing and then we watched '2001: a Space Odyssey' going to bed thinking: "My God - it's full of stars!"
This morning after a VERY late start, we had brunch, then we did some maintenance. Haritina cleaned the EVA helmets and patched them with silicone; the captain removed the last old microphone from them, and now they are as good as new (we exaggerate, of course).
Dragos, Iulia and Betty went on an EVA, and reacted positively to Captain Cook's proposal of having Chinese food for the night. We called the dish 'Yang Liwei Chicken'.
Apart from Jerry-the-Mouse, we did not encounter any Martians today - the three-legged creature seen in the lab is not a Triffid - it's Dragos' tripod. Engineering Report Dragos Bratasanu Reporting

Journalist Report Dragos Bratasanu Reporting It seems that although in the desert, away from civilization, the biological clocks of our crew worked perfectly and announced a wonderful Sunday. The members slept in late today and spent the day to catch up with writing, reading and some relaxation time. Iulia and Beatrice watched SF movies and the commander prepared his post-mission trip. In the evening we went out on a short EVA with the ATVs and enjoyed a perfect sunset in the American desert. Work begins tomorrow early in the morning. Cook's Report Virgiliu Pop Reporting 1a) Today was - a cooking day 1b) Was today a special day celebrated at the main meal with special food or activity? - No. Tomorrow will be a national holiday celebrating the union of the Romanian Principalities (1859), but mixing Wallachian and Moldavian food is not possible here (where is the corn flour for ‘Mamaliga’ – Polenta?) 2) List the foods served at today's main meal (usually the evening meal), giving full names of each. - Morning meal: We woke up VERY late, so we did not have a proper breakfast (it’s Sunday). We had a brunch instead.Beverages: coffee and tea. - Brunch: Haritina made us some ‘azimi’ (unleavened bread tortillas) – we ate them with processed cheese (the crew) and with a can of chili (the captain). Just by chance, a truck passing by the hab dropped some cans of beer and a bag of chips; we could not let them go to waste, so we ate them. - Evening meal: Yang Liwei Chicken. 3) List any main meal foods not finished by the crew (leftovers stored for later use or discarded) - None 4) Recipes for anything more complicated than following package directions exactly, or rehydrating. - Remember yesterday’s chicken who crossed the road to get dehydrated and shipped to Mars? We ate it tonight and named the dish for China's first taikonaut. Recipe: Yang Liwei chicken. Fry some rehydrated onions in ghee and peanut butter. Mix in some powdered ginger and some soy sauce. Meanwhile, rehydrate freeze-dried chicken, dehydrated leeks, dehydrated mixed peppers, sweet corn and mushrooms. Add these to the fried mixture. Adjust seasonings by adding hot sauce, sesame oil, and more soy sauce to taste. Serve over cooked spaghetti 5) Comments/questions: - Haritina and I were supposed to do some food inventorying - yet got way too busy with fixing the EVA helmets, so we'll do it tomorrow ... |
