Commander's Report

Jon Clarke Reporting

Today was spent getting set up.  Julio and Luisa spent the day setting up the biology lab, David and Carol set up the Terra XRD and XRF machine. David and Jhony unpacked the MARTE drill and deployed it with help from the rest of us deployed it on the first drill site in the Brushy Basin Member , a few hundred meters from the Hab, on a small rise formed by a fossil soil, complete with fossil ants nests and root impressions.  These will provide an excellent target to test the drilling, imaging, and analytical technologies.  Sarah trained us in the comms systems.

Otherwise we were involved trouble shooting and adapting and assessing adapting the food study to our needs.

Tomorrow, weather permitting (it is raining at the moment) we will test the drill and collect the first samples of core and outcrop for analysis.

Unpacking

As the title says, Sunday was mostly spent unpacking personal gear, food and technical equipment. The local store in Hanksville was holding our shelf-stable supplies as part of the MDRS food study, so we made a run to collect all of that. One last chance for a real coffee in what's probably as close to civilization that exists in this particular part of Utah!
