Commander's Report

Jon Clarke Reporting

Today was relatively quiet, being the midpoint of the mission. We slept in a bit later than usual and had a leisurely start. Six of us, plus Shannon and Daniel, headed out to Factory Butte and beyond to Muddy Creek. We collected some samples of the Mancos Shale below and above the Ferron sandstone (Tununk and Blue Gate members) and from the sandstone itself, collecting samples of coal, sandstone, and carbonaceous shale. We hoped to get as far down the stratigraphy as the Carmel Formation, looking for limestones to drill, but the high water level in Muddy Ck prevented us.

We then headed back to the Hab to drop Luisa off who had some more work on her DNA extractions. David and I looked for concretions and ventefacts near the cattle grid on Cow Dung Road. On the way the hire truck had a puncture again, so we dropped this off at Hanksville and proceeded in Carol’s and Shannon’s vehicles to Angel Point, a magnificent lookout over the Dirty Devil River south of Hanksville. On the way re rescued a van full of bogged people who had been there for seven hours. Three of them were Australians, so it was a surprise all round! We sampled outcropping gypsum beds of the Carmel Formation for extremophiles and at Angel Point sampled the carbonate concretion-bearing Navajo sandstone and shales of the overlying Carmel Formation.

Returning to Hanksville we said goodbye to Shannon and Danny, picked up the now repaired tire, and returned to the Hab where Luisa was cooking a wonderful meal for us.

Yes, I was a busy and eventful day for an “off day”, but it was a change of pace and saw lots of new and magnificent things, as well as collecting new samples.

We may watch a movie tonight!
